HOUSING ASSISTANCE
SERVICES & SUPPORT
Housing is in a state of transition in many regions of South Dakota. There are several communities in the state that have a genuine need for new housing. Others need to investigate rehabilitating older properties versus new construction. Changing demographics reflect a need for housing solutions. Divorce rates, Generation X’ers, and an aging population all contribute to the fact that there are fewer persons per household; and consequentially a need for alternative housing options.
A community does not have to be growing rapidly or creating jobs to investigate housing needs. For instance, a town may be located near a growing city and may offer land for housing, thereby being a “bedroom” community. District III can assist communities and evaluate their housing needs and provide help in creating housing goals and objectives.
HOUSING NEEDS ASSESSMENTS & SURVEYS
If your community would like to assess its current housing situation, as well as identify potential housing needs, District III can customize a housing needs assessment. An assessment includes an overview of the present housing situation, a set of recommended actions based on the current situation, and possible methods of implementing the recommended actions.
A housing survey may accompany the housing assessment if your community is concerned about the public's opinion on housing. The housing survey can help community leaders plan for future growth and give developers an idea of what types of housing would work best in the community.
