District III staff attended a workshop in Sioux Falls conducted by the South Dakota Rural Development Council (SDRDC) on developing Community Resource Team Assessments. The program provides a resource team that consists of 5-7 individuals with knowledge in various areas of community development who conduct an on-site assessment of all aspects of the community.
The assessment involves two to three days of hosting listening sessions with the many different community sectors, such as: agriculture, religious organizations, youth, senior citizens, business owners, civic groups, and others.
The basis for the discussion stems from the following three questions:
What are the major problems and challenges in your community?
What are the major strengths and assets of your community?
What projects would you like to see implemented in your community in the next 2, 5, 10, or 20 years?
On the final day, the team presents all of the information from the previous meetings and proposes the next steps that the community should take. A month after the completion of the assessment, the community is provided a full report that summarizes the results, identifies major themes, and supplies resources to help the community achieve its identified goals. SDRDC will continue to work with the community after the assessment is complete to connect the community with resources available to conduct comprehensive strategic planning and funding economic development initiatives. There is a one time cost of $1,500-$2,000 which covers the meals and lodging for the resource team members. The South Dakota Community Foundation will provide a $500 grant to help pay for a portion of the service. For more information, contact Brian at District III.
